The songlike character of Schumann's Three Fantasy Pieces and Brahms Second clarinet sonata found Finucane at his most expressive.....the autumnal shading of the Brahms had a nobility of phrasing. The rest of the evening flew by on various flights of musical fancy. Henri Rabaud's saccharine Solo de Concours, like Messager's...... introduced realms of decorative trills and gallops. Iwan Muller's Variations on Rossini's aria "Una voce poco fa" was a rollercoaster of serpentine zigzags and rhymthic hurdles. Finucane's gliding between the clarinet's registers was as seamless as his breath control, with his instrumental colouring equally spectacular.

In Weber's clarinet concertino John Finucane grasped this light yet striking piece's wide-ranging exploration of the clarinet as virtuoso and lyricist.

..the Clarinet Concerto (Robert Lamb world premiere)....is a concerto between contrasting styles and textures, as well as between orchestra and soloist. John Finucane relished the fireworks of the clarinet part.

John Finucane's elegant clarinet playing (Mozart Kegelstadt Trio) was effortlessly connected or articulated as the music required.

..how hauntingly lovely as the great clarinet solo of the Adagio... (he) moulds and inflects the passage as suavely as did Jack Brymer for Previn. Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2 RTÉ NSO Alexander Aninssimov (Naxos)
